How a Fantom Wallet Is Made

A Fantom aluminum frame CNC machined from a solid block

The short answer

The Fantom X, Fantom M and Fantom M Pro are made in Canada. Each aluminum frame is machined in house on a CNC machine, vapor honed, washed and anodized. A skilled technician then assembles every wallet by hand, and each one goes through quality control testing before it ships. Here is what happens at each step and why it matters for the wallet in your pocket.

Where are Fantom wallets made?

The Fantom X, the Fantom M and the Fantom M Pro are made in Canada. The frames are cut in Fantom's own shop, so the same team that designs the wallet controls how each frame comes out.

How is a Fantom wallet made, step by step?

1. The frame is CNC machined in house

Every Fantom X, Fantom M and Fantom M Pro frame starts as aluminum on a CNC machine in Fantom's own shop. A CNC machine cuts the part from a computer model, so each frame comes out to the same shape and the same tolerances as the last one. That consistency is what lets the lever fan your cards out smoothly, every time, without catching.

2. The frame is vapor honed and washed

Next, the frame is vapor honed: a fine abrasive mixed with water is sprayed onto the aluminum, which gives it a smooth, even satin surface. It is then washed and prepped for anodizing so the finish comes out the same across the whole frame.

Before anodizing, the machined parts are measured with a micrometer to check they are within tolerance.

3. The frame is anodized

Anodizing builds a hard protective layer into the surface of the aluminum itself, rather than painting a coat on top. That layer is why the frame resists scratches from keys and coins and keeps its color with daily use.

4. A skilled technician assembles it by hand

A skilled technician then assembles each wallet by hand. For the Fantom M Pro, this is also where the Apple Find My electronics go in.

5. Every wallet goes through quality control

Quality checks start before anodizing, when each part is measured, and every finished wallet goes through rigorous quality control testing before it ships.

Step What happens What it means for you
CNC machining, in house The frame is cut from a computer model Every frame matches, so the lever fans cards smoothly
Vapor honing and washing The aluminum is vapor honed, washed and prepped A smooth, even satin finish
Anodizing A hard protective layer is built into the metal Resists scratches and keeps its color
Hand assembly A skilled technician puts each wallet together; Find My electronics go into the M Pro Every wallet passes through a person's hands
Quality control Rigorous testing before it ships Each wallet is checked before it reaches you

Which Fantom should you choose?

All three are built the same way. The difference is what you carry:

  • Fantom X: the modular flagship. Its footprint is 22% smaller than the Fantom S, it holds up to 13 cards in the Regular size, and you add only what you carry with the Cash Holder, Coin Holder, Key Holder, ID Holder or Silicone Band.
  • Fantom M: the MagSafe wallet. It snaps onto the back of your iPhone and fans your cards out in one push.
  • Fantom M Pro: the Fantom M with Apple Find My built in, so you can see where your wallet is from your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fantom made in Canada?

Yes. The Fantom X, Fantom M and Fantom M Pro are made in Canada. Their aluminum frames are CNC machined in Fantom's own shop, vapor honed, washed and anodized, then assembled by hand by a skilled technician and tested before they ship.

What does anodizing do for a wallet?

Anodizing builds a hard protective layer into the surface of the metal instead of painting a coat on top. That makes the frame more resistant to scratches from keys and coins, and the color doesn't chip or peel the way paint can.

Is each Fantom wallet assembled by hand?

Yes. After the aluminum frame is CNC machined, vapor honed and anodized, a skilled technician assembles each Fantom X, Fantom M and Fantom M Pro by hand. Every wallet then goes through quality control testing before it ships.

Why does in-house machining matter?

Cutting the frames in Fantom's own shop means the team that designs the wallet also controls how each frame is made. Every frame comes off the CNC machine to the same shape, which is what keeps the card-fanning lever working smoothly.
